Girl Camper Founder Janine Pettit describes her passion for helping women start RVing in Podcast 053

Today’s show is going to be great because we’re talking to the woman who founded the Girl Camper movement.

Janine Pettit loves to be outdoors and uses her RV to go wherever she’d like. She is married and sometimes goes RVing with her husband, but she also goes alone and has been doing so for many years.

During her travels, she has encountered women who think that looks like so much fun, but they’re divorced or they’re widowed or they have a husband who’s a couch potato and has no interest in going with them.

So, Janine developed the Girl Camper organization to take women by the hand and help them figure it all out. They teach women about the type of equipment to buy, how to set it up and use it, and even how to fix many problems they may encounter.

Whatever it requires, Girl Camper wants women to feel confident enough to hit the road.

Her group has taken off. It now boasts 13,500 Facebook members and there are chapters and gatherings all over the country.

Surprisingly, the bulk of members are older than 55, but that number is dropping. She says it’s not surprising to see women 45 to 75 at the gatherings. There is no real agenda when they travel other than to have fun.

Once women get to a campground, some might want to go hiking, some to explore a cave, and others just want to relax in the quiet campground. At night, their inner chefs often emerge and they’re having a ball cooking for large community potlucks.

Girl Camper has leaders who specialize in various aspects of camping. For example, one woman has car camping buttoned down to a science. Another wanted to encourage women to walk, so she started a group called 99 Walks. Janine tells us more about how the group keeps people active and involved.

RV supplier Camco is a big supporter of Girl Camper, and Janine describes some equipment the company sells that she thinks every RVer should use. She also talks about her camper and why it is the perfect fit for her.

Girl Camper started with one woman’s dream. Janine Pettit loved being outdoors and wanted to encourage other women to join her on some adventures. Today, the group has taken on a life of its own.

There will be 35 new local chapters launching in 2020, bringing the number to 50. So, ladies, if you want to escape the daily demands of life and join some fun-loving women for a week or a weekend, there is likely a gathering near you.

You’ll find a ton of information on the Girl Camper website, including more than 200 podcasts covering everything you’d need to make RVing work. Like Janine said, there is no wrong way to go Girl Camping.

The key is to educate yourself by listening to podcasts, joining groups and talking to other people. I, too, have found the RV community to be incredibly supportive of new campers. Veterans, like Janine, are always willing to offer advice.
