Episode 016 – Travel is key for Bill & Laura Hoak

Today, we’re going to talk with a couple who have been workamping at two jobs every year since 2016.

Bill and Laura Hoak have enjoyed several workamping experiences in recent years. They have worked sales jobs, maintenance jobs, retail jobs and checked people into campgrounds.

They work one job in the summer, and then head to a warmer climate to take a different job each winter.

The Hoaks spent the summer working in Lebanon, Maine, and are either in Florida now, or headed that way.

A love for travel attracted them to the workamping experience. They spent many years living on the east coast, but really wanted to see some of the attractions in the west.

The Hoaks talk about how they find jobs on Workamper.com, and describe what it took for them to get on the road back in 2016. They also explain things they have implemented to make living a mobile lifestyle more practical.

The ability to travel is probably the No. 1 reason why people embrace the workamping lifestyle. That certain enticed the Hoaks to investigate workamping as a way to fund their travel dreams.

Working two different workamping jobs ever year has allowed them to immerse themselves into parts of the country they really wanted to explore.

Not every job is ideal, but the short-term gigs gave them a chance to visit places they had only been able to read about. They have enjoyed quite a few fun jobs along the way.

But, as Laura noted, it is important to be honest when preparing a resume to list jobs you’re not necessarily interested in performing. That prevents a lot of misunderstanding later.

One thing that helped improve their experience was the ability to learn from other workampers through the Workamper online community.
