Today we’re going to talk to the new director of the RV Safety and Education Foundation about things people can do to make their RV experience more enjoyable.
Trey Selman is the executive director of the RV Safety and Education Foundation, an organization that teaches people how to operate their recreation vehicles safely and to follow weight guidelines.
He describes the history of RVSEF and how he became involved with the group.
RVSEF is a big proponent of getting motorhomes, fifth wheels and travel trailers weighed to ensure that the units are not overweight on one corner. That can cause instability when driving and too much weight can damage the suspension systems and tires.
The organization also has a program that matches trucks to trailers to make sure that your existing truck or the one you plan on buying can safely pull the loaded weight of your RV.
Trey describes their RV Academy and the type of online training it provides that includes RV basics, driving safety, tire and weight safety.
RVSEF is planning a conference in May in Elkhart to discuss a number of safety-related issues and offer some live training.
A lot of people don’t really understand the importance proper weight plays in RV performance. It’s easy to go overweight in an RV by the time you bring in food, clothes, equipment and people, then fill the propane and water tanks.
Weight is even more important when driving down the highway. Stopping distances are increased and negotiating curves becomes more difficult.
Most people never get any kind of formal training on backing and driving an RV when they buy a unit. Fortunately, groups like RV Safety and Education Foundation provide affordable training and tips that can help keep you safe and take the stress out of travel.
Their conference, which takes place May 13 to 17 in Elkhart, gives people an opportunity to get driving lessons, get their RVs weighed, and sit in on more than 40 technical and lifestyle classes. You can learn how to fix your RV and better use some of the equipment on board.
